G League Basketball Competition By-Laws
Article I: Name and Purpose
Name: The name of this competition shall be G League.
Purpose: The purpose of this competition is to provide a structured and organized platform for basketball teams to compete, develop their skills, and promote sportsmanship and fair play.
Article II: Competition Structure
Divisions: The competition may include multiple divisions based on age, skill level, or other criteria as determined by the organiser(s).
Teams: Teams must register by the deadline set by the organiser(s). Each team is responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of the competition.
Format: The competition format (e.g., round-robin, knockout, or league play) shall be determined by the organiser(s) and communicated to all participants prior to the start of the competition.
Article III: Registration and Eligibility
Registration: Teams must complete the registration process by the specified deadline. Registration forms and fees must be submitted as outlined by the organiser(s).
Eligibility: Players must meet the eligibility criteria set forth by the organiser(s), which may include age restrictions, residency requirements, or other factors.
Home Team Designation:
- The first team listed in the schedule is the home team.
Home Team Bench and Warm-Up Area:
- The home team will use the bench and warm-up on the half-court to the left of the scorer’s table (when facing the court from the scorer’s perspective).
Jump Ball:
- Teams must play on the same half-court they warmed up on.
- Players in the centre circle should be facing the ring closest to their team bench.
Article IV: Game Rules and Regulations
Rules: The competition shall adhere to the official rules of basketball as established by G League, with any modifications specified by the organiser(s).
Game Duration: Two halves of 20 minutes each, with a 2-minute halftime.
Mouthguards: Strongly encouraged, though not mandatory, as a precaution against dental and facial injuries.
Time-Outs: Each team is allowed two timeouts per half.
Zero Tolerance Policy:
We have a ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY towards aggressive, abusive, or disrespectful behaviour. This applies to players, parents, and spectators. Offenders will be asked to leave the premises. In addition, a technical foul may be called against the offending team, giving the opposition two free throws and possession.
Ties: In the event of an equal score at the conclusion of regulation time, no extra time will be played (except in finals).
Grand Finals: Two 20-minute halves.
Scorekeeping: Each team must provide an official scorekeeper each week. A G League representative will be present on each court to assist with scoring.
Conduct: All participants must adhere to the code of conduct. Unsportsmanlike behaviour may result in penalties or disqualification.
Uniforms: Players are required to wear matching team uniforms approved by G League.
- Shorts must be plain black and free of pockets.
- In cases of uniform clash, the away team must use bibs provided by the Court Controller.
- Mouthguards are mandatory for all year groups.
- The Court Controller and/or Referee will have the final say regarding uniform requirements.
Mercy Rule: If a team leads by 20 points or more, the scoreboard will stop. Scoring continues on the iPad.
Games Commencement & Penalties:
- Games must start by the 10-minute mark of the first half, otherwise the game is a forfeit.
- Teams will be penalised 2 points for each minute late (added to the opposition’s score).
Number of Players:
- Teams may start with 4 registered players and finish with 3.
- Teams may use fill-in players (up to the last ordinary round, not finals). Maximum 12 players per bench.
Fill-In Players:
- Must pay the fill-in fee before playing: TryBooking link.
- Proof of payment must be shown to the Court Controller.
- Teams with 5 or fewer registered players may use fill-ins, with only 1 substitute allowed.
- Fill-ins can only play 3 games per season.
- To fully register, a fill-in must pay full fees.
- Fill-in players are not considered registered players.
- The fill-in fee is valid for one game only.
Article V: Officiating
Officials: Referees will be appointed by the organiser(s).
Decisions: Referee decisions are final. Protests must be submitted in writing within 24 hours.
Coaches:
- Responsible for calling substitutions and timeouts (players may not do so).
- May ask referees questions only during timeouts or halftime.
Technical Fouls:
- Ejection = automatic 1-game suspension (not including byes).
- Subject to tribunal review; appeals at organiser discretion.
- Offender may cause a technical foul, giving the opposition 2 free throws and possession.
Rules Interpretation: Disputes are referred to the Referee or Court Controller. If unresolved, the organiser(s) will decide.
Article VI: Scheduling and Postponements
Schedules: Game schedules will be distributed by the organiser(s). Changes will be communicated ASAP.
Postponements: Managed by organiser(s). Rescheduled games will be communicated.
Fixtures:
- Drawn up and issued by G League.
- Requests for byes must be submitted 14 days before season start.
- Requests for fixture changes must be submitted 5 days prior.
- Fixtures may change at short notice, but advance notice will be provided where possible.
Competition Points:
- Win: 3 points
- Loss: 1 point
- Draw: 2 points
- Bye: 2 points
- Forfeit: 0 points (recorded as 20–0 win to opposition)
Tiebreaker: For teams equal on points, ladder position is determined by percentage, then points differential.
No Time outs in the last three minutes of the game.
FINALS
Eligibility:
- Players must be registered and have played at least 6 games with that team.
- Byes and forfeits count as qualifying games.
- Special consideration applications (e.g., injury) must be submitted 7 days prior.
- Ineligible players = forfeit.
- Players must arrive before halftime to participate.
Tie Procedure:
- 2-minute break → 3 minutes of extra time.
Format:
- Standard: Top 4 (1v4, 2v3).
- Special circumstances: Top 8 finals.
Forfeits:
- Teams must notify G League 24+ hours prior to avoid $50+GST fine.
- Unnotified or illegal player forfeits incur a fine, payable before the next game.
Eligible Players: Must be registered, able to prove age, and present before halftime.
Illegal Players: Includes unregistered players, those failing finals criteria, under suspension, or using false names. Misconduct may be reported.
Registered Players: Teams must register all players. Additional players must be registered before playing. Players may play in multiple G League teams if registered and paid for each, provided the second team is in a higher age group.
Player Injury & Insurance:
- Court Controller must complete an incident report for injuries.
- Registered players are covered by Sports Cover Australia insurance.
- G League does not accept liability for injuries.
- Unregistered players are not insured.
Article VII: Awards and Recognition
Trophies or medals will be awarded to the top teams based on final standings.
Article VIII: Protests and Appeals
Protests: Must be submitted in writing within 24 hours of the incident.
Appeals: Must be submitted in writing within 7 days. Final decision rests with organiser(s).
Article IX: Miscellaneous
Liability: The organising committee is not liable for injuries or damages incurred during the competition.
Compliance: All teams and participants must comply with these bylaws and any additional rules.
Discipline: Violations may result in fines, suspensions, or disqualification.
