Basketball Competition By-Laws

Article I: Name and Purpose

  1. Name: The name of this competition shall be G League.
  2. Purpose: The purpose of this competition is to provide a structured and organized platform for basketball teams to compete, develop their skills, and promote sportsmanship and fair play.

Article II: Competition Structure

  1. Divisions: The competition may include multiple divisions based on age, skill level, or other criteria as determined by the organiser(s).
  2. Teams: Teams must register by the deadline set by the organiser(s). Each team is responsible for complying with the rules and regulations of the competition.
  3. Format: The competition format (e.g., round-robin, knockout, or league play) shall be determined by the organiser(s) and communicated to all participants prior to the start of the competition.

Article III: Registration and Eligibility

  1. Registration: Teams must complete the registration process by the specified deadline. Registration forms and fees must be submitted as outlined by the organiser(s).
  2. Eligibility: Players must meet the eligibility criteria set forth by the organiser(s), which may include age restrictions, residency requirements, or other factors.

Home Team Designation:

  • The first team listed in the schedule is the home team.

Home Team Bench and Warm-Up Area:

  • The home team will use the bench and warm-up on the half-court to the left of the scorer’s table (when you’re facing the court from the scorer’s perspective).

Jump Ball:

  • Teams must play on the same half-court they warmed up on. Players who are in the centre circle should be facing the ring closest to their team bench. 

 

Article IV: Game Rules and Regulations

    1. Rules: The competition shall adhere to the official rules of basketball as established by G League, with any modifications specified by the organiser(s).
    2. Game Duration: Games shall consist of two halves of 20 minutes each, with a 2-minute halftime.
  • Mouthguards: While mouthguards are not mandatory for participation in the G League, we strongly encourage players to wear them as a precautionary measure to help protect against dental and facial injuries during games.
  1. Time-Outs: Each team is allowed two time-out per half. 
  2. Ties: In the event of an equal score at the conclusion of regulation time, no extra time will be played, except for finals.
  3. Grand Finals: The grand final will consist of two 20-minute halves
  4. Scorekeeping: Each game will have an official scorekeeper from each team every week.
  5. Conduct: Players, coaches, and spectators must adhere to the code of conduct established by the organiser(s). Unsportsmanlike behaviour may result in penalties or disqualification.
  6. Uniforms: Players are required to wear matching team uniforms approved by G League. Shorts must be plain black and free of pockets. In cases of uniform clash, the away team must obtain a set of playing bibs from the Court Controller. Mouthguards are mandatory for all year groups. The Court Controller and/or Referee will have the final say regarding uniform requirements.
  7. Mercy Rule: If a team leads by 20 points or more, the scoreboard must stop. Scoring will still continue as normal on the Ipad scoring. 
  8. Games Commencement and Penalties: Games must commence by the 10-minute mark of the first half or will be deemed a forfeit. Teams will be penalized two points for each minute late, provided the opposing team is ready to play. Penalty points will be added to the opposition’s score.
  9. Number of Players: Teams are permitted to start with four registered players and finish with three registered players. Teams can have financial fill-in players up to the last ordinary round (not finals) with a maximum of 12 players on the bench during a game.
  10. Fill-In Players: Fill-in players must pay the fill-in fee as specified on the G League website using the QR code before taking the court. Proof of payment must be shown to the Court Controller on the day of the game. 
  1.   Each team must have at least four registered players to start a game. If your team has five or fewer registered players, you are allowed to use fill-in players, with a maximum of one substitute.
  2.   Fill-in players can only play a maximum of 3 games per season.
  3.   Should the fill-in player wish to register they must pay the full fee’s as stated by G League. 
  4. Fill in players are NOT classed as registered players. 
  5. The fill-in fee is valid for one game per season only.

Article V: Officiating

  1. Officials: Games will be officiated by referees appointed by the organiser(s). The number of referees per game will be determined by the organiser(s).
  2. Decisions: The decisions of the referees are final. Appeals or protests regarding officiating decisions must be submitted in writing to the organiser(s) within 24 hours of the game.
  1. Coaches are solely responsible for calling substitutions and timeouts; players are not permitted to do so.

 

  1. During timeouts or halftime breaks, coaches may ask the referee questions, but players or spectators are not allowed to engage in this.

 

  1. Technical Fouls: Players, coaches, or spectators ejected from a game will automatically receive a one-game suspension for the next fixture. This suspension does not include byes and may be subject to review by a tribunal. Appeals are at the discretion of the organiser(s).
  2. Rules Interpretation: Any disputes regarding the interpretation of rules or regulations shall first be referred to the Referee or Court Controller present. If unresolved, the matter will be determined by the organiser(s).

 

Article VI: Scheduling and Postponements

  1. Schedules: Game schedules will be distributed by the organiser(s) and are subject to change. Teams will be notified of any changes as soon as possible.
  2. Postponements: Postponements due to unforeseen circumstances will be managed by the organiser(s). Rescheduled games will be communicated to the affected teams.
  3. Competition Fixtures: G League will be responsible for drawing up and issuing all fixtures. Official fixtures cannot be altered without G League’s approval. Requests for byes must be submitted in writing 14 days before the season starts. Requests for fixture changes must be made 5 days prior.
  1. Fixtures may be subject to change on short notice. The league will make every effort to provide advance notice of any changes whenever possible.
  2. Ladder points may be reset within the first few weeks of the competition to accommodate any necessary adjustments.

 

  1. Competition Points: Points will be allocated as follows:
    • Win: 3 Points
    • Loss: 1 Point
    • Draw: 2 Points
    • Bye: 3 Points
    • Forfeit: 0 Points
    • Forfeited games will be recorded as a 20-0 win for the non-forfeiting team.

Final ladder positions for teams with equal points will be determined by percentage, then by game points differential.

  1. Eligibility for Finals: To be eligible for finals, a player must have participated in more than one-third of the regular season fixtures for that team or met specific criteria as outlined. Players must be physically present and listed on the official score sheet. Byes and forfeits count as qualifying games. Applications for special consideration due to injury or other reasons must be submitted in writing 7 days before the finals. Playing an ineligible player results in a forfeit.
  2. Forfeits: Notified forfeits will not incur a fine. Un-notified or illegal player forfeits will incur an $50+GST fine. Teams subject to forfeiture penalties must pay the fine before their next scheduled game.
  3. Eligible Players: Players must be registered with G League, able to prove their age, and present in the stadium and ready to play before the end of the first half. Ineligible players will result in a forfeit of the match.
  4. Illegal Players: Illegal players include those not registered, not meeting finals criteria, under suspension, or playing under an assumed name. Intentional play under an assumed name may be reported for misconduct.
  5. Registered Players: Teams must register all players with the competition. Additional players must register before playing. Players can play in additional teams within G League provided they are formally registered and have paid the competition fee for each team and the additional team is in a higher age group.
  6. Player Injury and Insurance: An incident report must be completed by the Court Controller for any injury. Registered players are covered by insurance through Sports Cover Australia. G League does not accept liability for injuries. Unregistered players are not insured.

Article VII: Awards and Recognition

  1. Awards: Trophies or medals will be awarded to the top teams based on final standings.

Article VIII: Protests and Appeals

  1. Protests: Protests regarding eligibility, game conduct, or rule interpretations must be submitted in writing to the organising committee within 24 hours of the incident.
  2. Appeals: Appeals of decisions made by organiser(s) must be submitted in writing within 7 days. The organiser(s) will review and make a final determination.

Article IX: Miscellaneous

  1. Liability: The organising committee is not liable for any injuries or damages incurred during the competition. 
  2. Compliance: All teams and participants are required to comply with these bylaws and any additional rules or regulations established by the organiser(s).
  3. Discipline: Violations of these bylaws or competition rules may result in disciplinary action, including fines, suspensions, or disqualification from the competition.
